An hour later, Christiana found herself quite enjoying her walk with Lord Stockington. He was gracious and kind, with good conversation and a pleasant manner. When he was not caught up with Lord Trenton and Lady Henrietta, he seemed to be an entirely different gentleman, one she wanted to see more of.

“I did not think that you required extra lessons for your dancing,” he said quietly, as they walked arm in arm. “You were quite wonderful last evening.”

“Thank you, my lord,” she replied, looking up at him. “And is that because you found it wonderful dancing with me, or is it because I did what I was expected to do and caught the eye of Lord Trenton?”

The question was blunt and direct, but Christiana had already stated that she was not about to be indirect when it came to the plan he had entwined her in.

He cleared his throat gruffly, not answering her for a few moments.

“Both, I suspect,” he said eventually with a small shrug. “You did capture Lord Trenton’s attention, and I was able to speak to Lady Henrietta.”

Her stomach dropped to her toes.

“Then all is going as expected?” she queried, hoping beyond all hope that he might turn to her and tell her that he had decided not to continue on with their façade, that he found her company better than any he had experienced before, that the feelings rising in him over her were more than he could bear.

Unfortunately, that did not occur.

“Look here!” he hissed, suddenly dragging her a little to the left. “There is Lady Henrietta now, she has gone into the bookshop! Lord Trenton is following after her, I see. What say you? Shall we continue our little game?”

Christiana sighed, her delight gone, her happiness evaporating in a second.

“I suppose we must take advantage of every opportunity.”

“That is my thought exactly,” he said at once, dropping her arm and gesturing her to go towards the bookshop. “I shall follow in a few minutes. We would not want them to think that we arrived together, for that would certainly get their backs up!”

“Indeed,” Christiana murmured, settling her shoulders, drawing in a deep breath, and walking into the bookshop.

Lord Trenton and Lady Henrietta were nowhere to be seen. The shopkeeper smiled at her and enquired whether or not she was after anything specific, but she simply shook her head and said she might browse for a few minutes. He nodded and smiled – and at that moment, Christiana spotted Lord Trenton. He was at the back of the shop, hidden between large shelves of books. Trying not to sigh aloud, Christiana made her way towards him.

She had to be careful how she appeared, of course, pretending to be surprised when he spotted her and came towards her. He wore a large grin, and she smiled back at him, quickly falling into conversation with him about the books he was currently reading. He, of course, offered to pay for whichever book she wished to buy, and with a glad smile, she accepted.
